about

The Abakuá is the title track of the CD and I wrote the song to express some challenging times I had once in my career when I was the Bandleader/Music Director of a traveling circus in Germany called, "Afrika Afrika". The group of African musicians in the band were from various places throughout east, west and south Africa. The challenge wasn't with the musicians but with those who owned and operated the circus as they were treating the musicians, dancers, singers and drummers in the show with very little human respect.
Abakuá is an Afro-Cuban men's initiatory fraternity which originated from fraternal associations in southeastern Nigeria and southwestern Cameroon. Abakuá has been described as "an Afro-Cuban version of Freemasonry". It was believed that the Abakuá could be transformed into leopards to stalk their enemies.
